Tragic end: Gang rape survivor hangs herself

One of the rapists, granted pre-arrest bail, had recently threatened her.

BAHAWALPUR:

A 10th grade student hanged herself on Monday.

On June 8, Irum, a resident of Chak 556-DB near Yazman, was abducted by her neighbour Saleem on gunpoint and taken to a house, where he and his three unidentified accomplices raped her.

Police registered the complaint, but did not arrest anyone. A court granted pre-arrest bail to Saleem four days ago.

Saleem then went to Irum’s house and threatened her. The victim’s father told reporters that Saleem had told Irum that no one could harm him because the police were supporting him.

“After Saleem left the house, Irum went to her room and locked herself. We later found her body hanging from the ceiling fan,” he said.

A police squad and MPA Khalid Mehmood Jajja visited the victim’s family after Irum’s death. The family told the police officials that Sub Inspector Mehmood was supporting the rapists. They said Mehmood had been pressing them to reach a settlement with the rapists.

Yazman DSP Malik Mehmood Shahid told The Express Tribune that DPO Sarfraz Falki had suspended Mehmood from duty.
