Sajjad hopes to make presence felt in Asian events
Pakistan cueist aiming for 6-Red title in August.
KARACHI:
Pakistan cueist Mohammad Sajjad is itching to do well in the upcoming Asian 6-Red competition and Team Championship, taking place in Karachi in August.
Sajjad has remained in the shadow of former IBSF world champion Mohammad Asif, who is currently the country’s top player.
Both cueists combined their prowess to help Pakistan win the maiden IBSF World Team Championship in 2013 and narrowly lost the title in 2014.
However, in the individual events, Asif is the superior of the two, having not only won the IBSF World Championship but also the Asian 6-Red title, which he will be defending next month.
This time around, Sajjad has set his sights on the same title and feels that he has a good chance of winning it.
“I’m definitely aiming to win the 6-Red competition,” Sajjad told The Express Tribune.
“Moreover, Asif and I will try to make sure that Pakistan also go onto win the Asian Team Championship. We’ll be playing at home, so we have greater responsibility on our shoulders.”
Sajjad said that although team titles are important, individual honours enable the player to shine in his own limelight, while adding: “We need to make sure that one of the Pakistani cueists ends up as the 6-Red champion.
“We shouldn’t allow any foreigner to take it away from us because the tournament is being played in our home territory and we’ll have home conditions to support our cause.”
He further revealed that he had putting in extra hours of practice instead of waiting for the training camp to begin after Eid.
