13 injured in Quetta blast
SHO says the number of causalities expected to rise.
QUETTA:
At least 13 people, including a child, were injured in a blast in Kandahari Bazaar, Quetta on Sunday.
“The bomb was planted near a shoe shop. At least 13 people were injured and shifted to Provincial Sandeman Hospital,” SHO City Police Station Mohammed Aslam told The Express Tribune.
The injured were shifted to the Provincial Sandeman Hospital Quetta for treatment, where a state of emergency was imposed to cope with the aftermath of the bombing. And two of the injured were said to be in critical condition and were admitted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH).
“At 13 [least] injured [people] were brought to the hospital. The two injured with critical wounds had been shifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH),” medics at the Provincial Sandeman Hospital said.
The medic added that no dead body had been brought to the hospital.
“An improvised explosive device (IED) was planted near an open sewage passing in front of a shoe shop,” Aslam said, adding that he did not know who the attack was targeting.
Abdul Razzaq, capital city police officer (CCPO) Quetta, said the bomb was a Russian pencil device weighing half a kilogram.
“It is premature to [say] who is behind this gruesome attack in this holy month of Ramazan,” Muhammad Jaffar, senior police officer Quetta said, adding that no group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
The wounded people were passersbys and shopkeepers. “This blast [was] meant to terrorise people and gain media attention. Investigations are underway to trace the culprits involved in this attack,” Jaffar added.
Further, SHO Aslam said that the number of causalities could rise. Rescue workers, police and paramilitary troops reached the area soon after the explosion.
Kandahari Bazaar is located in the heart of Quetta and is always packed with people. Several markets, shopping malls and restaurants are located in this area.
