PESHAWAR:

Nearly 2,000 reserve policemen have been deployed in the district to maintain security during Eid, while the entry of vehicles in major shopping centres has also been banned.

A police official told The Express Tribune on Saturday that the reserve police will assist regular police in maintaining security. “Police in plainclothes as well as in uniform backed by the bomb disposal unit (BDU) and assisted by sniffer dogs will be deployed across Peshawar as part of Eid security arrangements,” he added.

He said special arrangements have also been made for Eid prayer congregations.

According to the police official, leaves had been cancelled for all police officials and they have been directed to be present on duty during Eid.

“Around 2,000 officials from Frontier Reserve Police and District Reserve Police as well as mobile vans of local police stations will patrol their respective jurisdictions,” he added.

“Qissa Khwani and its adjacent bazaars have been closed for vehicular traffic and barriers have been placed on roads leading to these markets, while similar arrangements have been made for Liaqat Bazaar in Saddar,” he said.

“Extra traffic contingents have also been called in to regulate traffic in the city,” the official added.

Search operation

At least seven suspects were arrested in a search operation in Rashid Garhi, Yakatoot late Friday night.

According to the police, a proclaimed offender was also arrested in addition to the seven suspects. Two pistols, 20 cartridges and 500 grammes of hashish were recovered in the operation.

Yakatoot DSP supervised the search operation and the police teams were assisted by the BDU as well as policewomen.
