Formal statistics: Youth urged to play active role

More than half the population of youth, aged between 15-29 years, is unemployed, while only 8% youth is self-employed, with a high degree of gender disparity. Female inactivity in the province is very high at 91.5% in 2006-07, official statistics indicated. This was stated by speakers at the Provincial Youth Panel Discussion Prospects of Peace and Social Cohesion in Sindh, organised by the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (PILER) at PILER Centre Karachi and attended by a large number of youth. The speakers said Sindh has lower multi-dimensional poverty indices as compared to other provinces. The gap between urban and rural indices is wider at 13.6% in urban and 78.21% in rural areas, which indicates that rural areas of Sindh are living in extreme poverty and facing multiple deprivations.
