ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif gave a message to his rivals on Tuesday, saying that their actions would destabilise the country and jeopardise progress.

“We have now entered the 21st century yet some political parties are talking about revolutions. They should shun politics of the past as such actions only destabilise political progress and democracy,” said the premier while addressing a ceremony for the Taxpayer Privileges and Honour Card Scheme in the capital.

He was referring to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), which is demanding the verification of votes in disputed constituencies, and Dr Tahirul Qadri’s Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT).

No one can be permitted to hinder the journey of progress and all political parties must join hands in the government’s development agenda, he added.

The premier said neither can development take place in just a matter of days nor can all the country’s problems be resolved overnight. “We have had to take tough decisions to put the economy back on track.”

Earlier, he distributed Privilege Cards to the top 100 taxpayers at the Prime Minister’s Office Auditorium. The scheme has been launched to promote a tax-compliant culture in the country and will recognise the top 100 taxpayers each year.

PML-N meeting

Later on Tuesday, a meeting of the PML-N leadership was scheduled, which a senior official of the PM Office said “was a scheduled gathering and had nothing to do with the latest political statements”.

The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, SAFRON Minister Lt General Abdul Qadir Baloch, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Senator Raja Zafarul Haq, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mehtab Abbasi and Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal.

The ongoing military operation Zarb-e-Azb and internally displaced persons (IDPs) came under discussion. The meeting also discussed ceremonies planned by the government on Independence Day, he added.
