Glad tidings: Scottish university honours governor

The University of the West of Scotland has conferred an honorary degree on Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar. He has been awarded the doctorate in recognition of his distinguished contribution to business, politics and philanthropy. Sarwar has been recognised as a self-made businessman and an outspoken politician committed to the values of social justice and equality. Sarwar was a noted member of the Labour Party in Scotland. He served as an MP for 13 years. He has worked extensively on race relations and the assimilation of ethnic minorities. Sarwar retired from British politics in 2010. The governor has played a pivotal role in strengthening the bilateral relations of the United Kingdom and Pakistan. University of the West of Scotland Vice-Chancellor Professor Craig Mahoney said, “We are delighted to confer the doctorate on Muhammad Sarwar. He has made a distinguished contribution to Scottish society.”
