Boy rescued, six including kidnappers arrested

Seventeen-year-old Shahbaz was kidnapped by at least three men travelling in a Toyota Corolla near Safoora Chowk.

KARACHI:

The Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) and the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) claim to have recovered an abducted teenager and arrested the six men allegedly involved in the kidnapping.

Seventeen-year-old Shahbaz, a college student, was kidnapped by at least three men travelling in a Toyota Corolla near Safoora Chowk in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on June 4. He was then taken to an undisclosed location from where the kidnappers started calling his family and asking for ransom.

According to CPLC officials, the kidnappers had demanded nearly four million rupees from the family and warned of dire consequences if they failed to pay the ransom money or informed the police. The family, however, approached the authorities to help get their son back.

"We asked them to make a deal with the kidnappers," said CPLC chief Ahmed Chinoy. "The family and the kidnappers reached a consensus on one million rupees."

The kidnappers shifted the abductee to the Moro district and called the family to deliver the ransom. The family reached Moro to hand the money over to the kidnappers. However, CPLC and AVCC officials and personnel were already present there and arrested the four kidnappers who had arrived to collect the ransom.

AVCC officials said that the four kidnappers were injured and arrested after an exchange of fire, while Shahbaz was recovered. Two other kidnappers were also arrested on the information provided by those arrested. The officials said that the kidnappers are being interrogated.
