Monsoon threat: Notices issued to owners of dangerous buildings

WCLA to provide technical assistance to building owners.

LAHORE:

The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has issued notices to owners of 60 dangerous buildings ahead of the monsoon rains.

The buildings are in a dilapidated condition and pose a threat to their residents as well as those living in adjacent buildings.

The WCLA has directed the owners of the buildings to repair the structures before the start of the rainy season.

The authority has proposed several kinds of sides structural repairs to the owners after carrying out an initial survey.

The notices say the WCLA staff will inspect the buildings after the deadline to check whether the proposed repairs have been carried out or not.

The authority has warned the owners to immediately repair the buildings otherwise stern action would be taken against them under the WCLA Act, 2012.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, WCLA Director General Kamran Lashari said the authority would provide technical assistance to the owners of dangerous buildings.

“Our team is already providing technical assistance and support to some building owners for carrying out the repairs,” Lashari said.

WCLA Urban Planning Deputy Director Shahid Mehmood said many owners had contacted the authority after getting the notices.

“We have already received requests for repairs. However, some of them have not submitted technically-correct drawings. We are guiding them in the preparation of correct drawings and documents,” he said.

Javed Iqbal Bajwa, the WCLA Land Record and Property Transfer deputy director, told The Express Tribune that the authority was taking steps to preserve the historical heritage of the city.

“WCLA cannot financially assist these owners, but we are available for technical support,” Bajwa said.
