Model Town mayhem: Tribunal asks for phone records of CM, others

Top intelligence agencies told to file reports and video of the incident.

Records of phone conversations between Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and former law minister Rana Sanaullah, among other officials, must be provided by the Joint Investigation Team probing the June 17 clash between police officials and Pakistan Awami Tehreek members in Model Town, a judicial tribunal of the Lahore High Court ordered on Wednesday.


The tribunal also asked for records of conversations with former principal secretary to the chief minister, Dr Tauqeer Shah and other officers from the executive and police on the day of the incident.

It also instructed the directors of the Inter Services Intelligence, Intelligence Bureau and SP Special Branch to file their reports and video recordings of the incident.


Justice Ali Baqar Najfi asked inspector general of police in Punjab to provide information on standard operating procedures for the communication of orders to him or police officials.

The tribunal directed the JIT to submit evidence such as transcripts of phone conversations from June 16 to June 17 between the CM and Home Secretary Punjab, Commissioner Lahore Division, CCPO Lahore, DCO Lahore, former DIG Operations Lahore Rana Abdul Jabbar, SP Operations Model Town Tariq Aziz, SP Headquarters Lahore Maroof Safdar Wahla, SP Operations Saddar Malik Awais, SP CIA Umar Virk, SP Operations Iqbal Town Farrukh Raza, SP Investigation Model Town Mohammad Nadeem, SP Flying Squad Agha Mohammad Ramzan, SP Mujahid Squad Abdul Rehman Sherazi and SP Security Lahore Salman Khan.

These reports are requested by July 14, the next date of hearing.

During the proceedings, Amjad Ali, a police constable injured during the operation, submitted an affidavit that was been made part of the record..
