Transplantation act to include donations after accidental deaths
Amendment to Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 2010, likely to surface soon.
KARACHI:
A provision to donate human organs or tissues after accidental death will likely be proposed as an amendment to the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 2010, in the National Assembly soon.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday, parliamentarian Kishwer Zehra has submitted a request to the National Assembly secretary to introduce a bill to amend the mentioned act. The proposed act will be called the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues (Amendment) Act, 2014. Zehra has suggested inserting a section, namely ‘provision for donation of human organs or tissues after accidental death’.
Accidental deaths
The parliamentarian suggested that authorities issuing driving licences should make a provision in the licence form for obtaining the consent of the applicants regarding donation of human organs in case of their accidental death. The applicants will sign the form for allowing the transplant of his organs or tissues in case they die in an accident by the nearest authorised medical institution or hospital that is recognised by the monitoring authority.
Likewise, Zehra proposed that the monitoring authority, driving licence issuance authority or any other related bodies in the fraternity of public health should publicise the importance of being a deceased donor. They should do that in the light of different scientific and religious aspects so that people may contribute for the welfare of humanity.
Zehra said that such donations may give a new life to persons in need of organs or tissues, and thus arises the need to make a provision to donate human organs or tissues in case of accidental death.
