ISLAMABAD:

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will soon start work on a planned cricket stadium near Pakistan Monument at Shakarparian, a board official said on Monday.

He said the stadium will be ready for domestic cricket in six months, adding it is too early to tell when the project will be completed.

The official said the environmental impact assessment of the project and other legal requirements have been completed.

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) had allotted 40 acres to PCB near Shakarparian on a 33-year lease for a cricket stadium in 2008. As per the agreement, PCB was to bear the total cost of the project while 25 per cent of the sale proceeds of tickets for matches were to be given to CDA.

The stadium was planned to accommodate 50,000 spectators.

The project was to be completed in five years
but the PCB could not execute it within the timeframe which led to the plot’s cancellation.

The idea to build an international cricket stadium in Islamabad came up in 1990 and 11.5 acres was leased to the PCB which was increased to 30 acres in 1992 but the authorities failed to materialise the plan.

I always visit Islamabad and have visited it for the last 25 years. Islamabad was built in 1970 Where was the PCB for the last 40 years? The location is actually a great choice, but it might block the lights of the Pak monument. If they manage to have a great view of it in the background of the stadium, then it will be a great sight especially at night. I just hope it gets done and then international cricket returns to Islamabad and Pindi. Let's not forget that those two are the two safest cities in the country.
