Original design: China persuaded to stick to Gwadar route, says JUI-F chief

ISLAMABAD:

Chief of the Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI-F) Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that he had managed to persuade the Chinese government through diplomatic channels to revert back to the original route of Gwadar through Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) for the economic corridor. This, he said, would bring economic dividends to the province.

In an informal talk with reporters, Fazl said the federal government must allocate a reasonable amount for K-P. He added that his party will ensure that this is achieved in the upcoming budget.

He said the government should take extreme measures for the relief of the internally displaced people (IDPs). He feared resentment from the IDPs could cause countless problems for the government once the operation ends.

Fazl said the people of North Waziristan have seen a great deal of violence and it is time to bring some stability into their lives. He added that miscreants could play on the sentiments of the tribesman who have fled the region.

The JUI-F chief urged the government to provide relief to ensure a smooth process of peace-building.

Speaking about the rise of the ISIS in Syria and Iraq, Fazl said that the prominence of groups who do not recognise international boundaries is a prerequisite for militant factions. He added that since militants have crossed the border into Afghanistan, the government must give serious consideration to any future fallout by engaging tribal elders and civilians.

Fazl said that certain elements were trying to destabilise democracy. All political parties must counter this threat but the government needs to adopt a serious approach to preserve the essence of democracy, he said.

PTI rally

Referring to the August 14 rally planned by the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), the JUI-F chief said that his party is currently assessing the situation and have not decided their stance.

Taimoor | 10 years ago | Reply I am PTI supporter, but I appreciate this effort from Molana. Nawaz League is deliberately trying to stop development in KPK and therefore changed the original corridor route. @Amir Khan, Why should it pass through rapist dens in Punjab? Or why any development be done in bhattakhor dens in Karachi? Two can play this ugly game. Don't spread provincialism.
