Caught red-handed: Student threatens KU teacher for not letting him cheat
Rangers withdrew their security because their demand to allow one student to cheat were not met, says teacher.
KARACHI:
A self-proclaimed activist of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) resorted to giving life threats to a University of Karachi (KU) teacher when he was caught with cheating material during a law exam on Saturday.
The candidate, identified as Shakir Awan, was appearing for the Islamic jurisprudence exam at the varsity’s physics department that was designated as one of the exam centres for the on-going Bachelor of Laws exams, said Dr Intikhab Ulfat, the physics assistant professor who had caught the candidate red-handed.
The incident occurred a day after the Rangers personnel, who have been deployed for the varsity’s security, had reportedly refused to take responsibility for the exam centre over the faculty’s ‘non-cooperative attitude’.
“A day earlier, when we had caught 36 candidates with cheating material during the constitutional law exam, a few personnel of the paramilitary force arrived with the demand to not only drop the case of one specific wrongdoer, but also to facilitate him in cheating,” the assistant professor told The Express Tribune. “Upon my refusal, the paramilitary personnel withdrew their security duties.”
In the absence of security personnel on Saturday, the confrontation caused much disruption in the middle of the exam as around a dozen of Awan’s confidantes also joined in to pressurise the faculty members and other administrative officials to allow them to cheat.
“The candidate introduced himself as a PPP activist over and over again as he boasted about his direct contacts at the Sindh chief minister house,” said Dr Ulfat.
The PPP Karachi spokesperson, Latif Mughal, however, denied that Awan was a party activist and accused him of using the party’s name in order to save his own skin.
Meanwhile, the KU security officer, Dr Muhammad Zubair, when approached by The Express Tribune said that the Rangers had later been deployed at the exam centre as a result of an official letter, asking them to take up the security.
For his part, the Rangers spokesperson claimed that the reports regarding the Rangers’ behaviour during the exam were misconstrued. He added that the Rangers DG has taken notice of the incident and ordered an inquiry into the matter. The spokesperson claimed that disciplinary action will be taken against those responsible for the incident.
