Attacking policemen: PAT activists sent on 10-day judicial remand
ATC issues notices to cops, adjourns hearing till July 13.
ISLAMABAD:
An anti-terrorist court (ATC) on Friday sent 53 workers of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) on a 10-day judicial remand on charges of attacking policemen on June 23 outside the Benazir Bhutto Airport International Airport (BBIA).
ATC Judge Pervez Ismail Joia sent PAT activists on judicial remand after their 10-day physical remand expired. On June 25, police had obtained a physical remand of the workers.
During the course of hearing on Friday, the party workers were produced before the court where police requested the judge for their judicial remand. The PAT activists also filed a bail application.
Tariq Butt, counsel for the petitioners, maintained that police had registered cases against the party workers on mala fide intentions. He claimed the workers had gathered outside the airport to welcome their party chief Tahirul Qadri on June 23 but the police used teargas to disperse the peaceful crowd.
The counsel further said the PAT workers had been killed by the police in Lahore and authorities tried to use the same tactics in Rawalpindi.
He requested the court to grant the activists bail. He maintained their innocence and asked the court to acquit them. The court issued notices to police officials and adjourned the case till July 13.
