KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) called for reports on Friday from the DG Rangers, the IG police and their subordinates regarding the whereabouts of the three men allegedly taken into custody by the law enforcers on June 27.

A division bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, directed the federal and the provincial law officers to furnish the reports by July 10.

Sajjad Alam had taken the provincial heads of the Rangers, the police and its specialised units, including the Special Investigation Unit and Anti-Violent Crime Cell to court. He submitted that the personnel of both the law enforcing agencies had taken away his son Shahzad Alam, uncle Saeedur Rehman and cousin Khawaja Alam, during a raid on their house in Mauripur on June 27. According to him, the DG Rangers himself was present during the operation.

The petitioner submitted that now senior law enforcers are sending men to demand Rs2 million for the safe release of the detainee, adding that they have also threatened to implicate them in false cases and hand over the three men to the intelligence agencies if their demand was not fulfilled.

The petitioner’s lawyer, Naseeruddin, pleaded to the court to order the official respondents to produce the detainees in the court of law and also furnish the details of cases, if any, lodged against them in the court.

After preliminary hearing, the bench issued notices to the respondents, the deputy attorney-general and assistant advocate-general to file comments regarding the whereabouts of the detainees or their involvement in any case. The hearing was adjourned till July 10.
