No decision: ATC reserves verdict on Rangers official’s bail plea
The suspects allegedly took Rs100,000 to help recover four men kidnapped for ransom.
KARACHI:
An anti-terrorism court (ATC) reserved verdict on the bail-after-arrest application of a Rangers official in connection with his alleged involvement in a kidnapping case.
The ATC-I reserved verdict on the bail plea of the Rangers’ sub-inspector, Muhammad Riaz Sarwar Tumman, for July 8 after hearing arguments from both sides. The court had dismissed his pre-arrest bail application and he was sent to jail on May 13.
According to the prosecution, four men - Havaldar Lala Ameen, Shiraz, Ghazi Khan and Sher Afzal - were kidnapped by unidentified men on July 31, 2010. The prosecution said that the unidentified men had arrived at the residence of the kidnapped near the Karachi Central Jail and had then abducted them. Since then, they have not been recovered, it added.
While the complainants were searching for the men, two Rangers officials - Tumman and Sher Afsar - offered to help, saying that they could help them recover the ‘missing persons’, said the state prosecutor. The officials took Rs100,000 to provide help, he added, but couldn’t produce the missing persons.
Subsequently, the complainants had gone to the Sindh High Court (SHC) and filed a missing persons petition, said the prosecutor. During the enquiry, the Rangers officials confessed that they had taken the money but also claimed that they had later returned it, added the prosecutor.
Afsar was sent to jail while Tumman was granted an interim bail from the SHC, with directions to appear before the relevant court.
A case, No.336/10, under section 365-A (kidnapping or abducting for extorting property, valuable security, etc.) read with section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, was lodged on the complaint of Muhammad Yousuf at the New Town police station.
