Justice Khalid Mahmood of Lahore High Court on Monday issued notices to the Punjab government to submit a reply on a petition challenging undue inflation of prices of commodities of daily use ahead of Ramazan.

Petitioner Azhar Siddique said the prices of essential items of daily use had skyrocketed ahead of Ramazan, depriving the common man of the ability to afford these items. He said prices of such commodities should be kept at a nominal level at least in Ramazan. He said traders and shopkeepers were involved in hoarding and artificially inflating the prices of essential commodities.
“Even western countries try to keep prices of essential items down during Ramazan... unfortunately the opposite happens in Pakistan.” The petitioner requested the court to direct the government to file an explanation for its failure to control prices of items of daily use in Ramazan.
