KARACHI:
Two militants and an arrested suspect were killed in separate encounters with the Rangers and the police, while a general physician and a political party's worker were among five killed in separate incidents of target killings and crime in the city on Friday.

At least two suspected militants were killed during an exchange of fire with the Rangers in Madina Colony. According to a Rangers' spokesperson, the encounter took place while the Rangers troops were cordoning off the area to conduct a search operation against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) present in the area. The armed militants opened firing at the Rangers from their hideout and the Rangers responded by firing back.

Two militants were killed and one managed to escape during the exchange of fire. Their bodies were taken to the Edhi morgue for identification after the medico-legal formalities were completed at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The Rangers spokesperson confirmed that the militants killed in the encounter belonged to TTP and said that weapons were also recovered from their possession.

Separately, an arrested suspect was killed during an encounter with the police when he was trying to flee from the custody of the Sacchal police in district Malir. The accused, Muhammad Ali, son of Sharfuddin Chandio, was arrested by the police over his alleged involvement in the rape and murder of a minor girl. According to the police officials, the suspect kidnapped the girl on Wednesday night and killed her after raping her. He was arrested after the residents of the area and the family of the victim informed the police. The accused, who is a neighbour of the victim, had kidnapped the girl when she left her home to buy something from a nearby shop.

DSP Qamar Ahmed said that the accused snatched a gun from the constable and began indiscriminate firing when he was being taken to the hospital after he complained about being sick. The police sniper, deployed at the watch tower, responded by shooting the suspect, who died on the spot. Meanwhile, Dr Syed Sharafat Ali, 55, a general physician and son of Syed Shaukat Ali, was shot dead in his clinic by the armed men, within the limits of the Gulbahar police station. DSP Ejazuddin said that the deceased was working in his clinic in Liaquat Chowk when at least two armed men barged into his clinic and began shooting. The deceased was shot thrice and was being rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital when he died. He was the second general physician to have been killed this way in the area in the last few weeks. However, DSP Ejazuddin said the two killings seem unrelated. He felt Dr Ali may have been targeted due to a personal enmity.

A worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was also shot dead in Mujahid Colony in Orangi Town. Police officials said that the deceased was near his house when at least two armed men killed him. He was shot once in the head and died on the spot. His body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy. According to police officials, the deceased may have been killed over a political spat.
