Clean it up: LWMC to help Quetta manage waste
An extensive one-time zero-waste operation would be carried out
LAHORE:
The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) has signed a formal memorandum of understanding with the Quetta Metropolitan Corporation (QMC) to provide technical assistance to improve solid waste management in Quetta. A six-member delegation headed by Planning Manager Asif Iqbal visited Quetta and conducted a detailed waste composition and characterisation study. Based on the study, LWMC experts devised and proposed a short-term waste management strategy for the QMC. According to the study, most of the solid waste produced in Quetta comprised 40 per cent biodegradable, 23 per cent non-combustible and 10 per cent combustible components. An extensive one-time zero-waste operation would be carried out in which more than 30,000 tonnes of waste from Quetta would be removed and transferred to a dumpsite. The LWMC has recommended the QMC install 200 waste bins on important roads and locations in the city.
