Treason trial: Defence team cross-examines interior secretary

During hearing, interior secretary says PM did not lodge complaint against Musharraf but only ordered investigation.

ISLAMABAD:

Former president Pervez Musharraf’s defence team, led by Advocate Farogh Naseem, began cross-examining of the interior secretary, the complainant in the treason case against Musharraf, on Tuesday.

During the hearing, Interior Secretary Shahid Khan said the prime minister did not lodge a complaint against Musharraf but only ordered an investigation. The three-judge special bench, Justice Faisal Arab, resumed hearing of the case.

“Is there any law that authorises the premier to order the home secretary to file a complaint?” asked Naseem. The secretary replied that he is not aware of such an SRO or law, however, the prime minister as a chief executive can order a probe into any case.

Prosecutor Akram Sheikh raised objections over the defence team’s queries but Justice Faisal Arab overruled the objection, and Sheikh left the courtroom. The cross-examination is still in progress and the court will take up this case today (Wednesday). No additional documentation was carried out after the complaint was filed.
