‘More needed to make Bahawalpur a tourist hub’

Commissioner says a distinct culture and history add to city’s appeal.

BAHAWALPUR:

More efforts are needed to promote cultural activities in Bahawalpur to make it a centre for tourism, said Bahawalpur Commissioner Captain (r) Javed Akbar on Tuesday.

“Bahawalpur is the city of poets and saints. It is a city with a distinct culture. The culture of this area is different from any other and can play an important role in making Bahawalpur a prime tourist destination,” Akbar, who had recently been deputed to the district, told The Express Tribune.

The commissioner said that establishment of a separate authority to manage and oversee the affairs of the Lal Suhanra National Park was being actively considered. “This will make Lal Suhanra a safari park of international standing,” he said.

He said a lot of work was needed to develop the Bahawalpur district. “Any manner of corruption by government functionaries cannot and will not be tolerated,” he added. The commissioner said all possible steps would also be taken to eliminate corruption from government departments. He said support of the people would be instrumental in rooting out corruption in government departments.
