Indian court issues arrest warrant for MS Dhoni

Cricketer in trouble for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, according to Indian media.

ANANTAPUR:
An Indian court issued on Tuesday an arrest warrant for top cricketer and captain of the Indian cricket team MS Dhoni for "allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus," according to the Hindustan Times (HT).

A local court in Anantapur, in the Andhra Pradesh state, issued the arrest warrant after Dhoni failed to appear in court despite being summoned three times, the Indian daily added.

The police has been directed to present Dhoni in court on July 16.

The Indian captain came under heat after a controversial picture of his was published in a magazine.

Business Today, published in India, in its April 2013 edition carried carried an image of Dhoni portrayed as Hindu god Vishnu, with the caption "God of Big Deals".

The image also showed Dhoni holding products of several companies, including a shoe in his hand.

Subsequently, a leader of a local party filed a petition in court earlier this year alleging that the cricketer had "hurt the sentiments of Hindus by denigrating a Hindu god," HT reported.

Earlier in February this year, Dhoni, along with Suresh Raina, also came under the scanner for alleged spot-fixing after some classified parts of investigation into the star-studded Indian Premier League (IPL) corruption scam were leaked to a section of the Indian media.
