HYDERABAD:
The Majlis-i-Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) has demanded the removal of the incumbent government of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz through a judicial decree and asked for the installation of an interim government in its place.
"Not only has the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz league lost its legality by coming into power through a rigged election," said MWM provincial general-secretary Allama Ameen Shaheedi at a press conference on Sunday. "In the time since then, their government has been involved in large-scale corruption, suppression of the opposition, delaying military operation against militants as well as embezzlement of public funds."
Shaheedi announced that his party will support the Pakistan Awami Tehreek-led informal alliance of parties in their movement to depose Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and to oust his party from the government. "We will put pressure on the judiciary through our movement to expedite the hearing of the electoral fraud cases," he said. "Once the court has passed its judgment on those cases, Sharif's government will lose credibility."
Shaheedi explained that their party wants the judiciary to appoint an interim government, which will be tasked with overhauling the Election Commission of Pakistan and holding transparent elections.
The MWM leader said that the party will not do anything that will go against the constitution. However, when asked, he could not cite any constitutional provision that empowers the judiciary to remove a government and install an interim set-up in its place.
Talking about the military operation in North Waziristan, Shaheedi asked the army to also launch an operation in the 'settled areas' where thousands of 'nurseries' are producing a new generation of militants in the province. "I met the Sindh Chief Minister last year and discussed this issue with him," he said. "The CM said he knows that there are around 5,000 such nurseries in Sindh but he isn't able to take action against them."
According to the MWM leader, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan is also supporting the military operation in North Waziristan.
He said Khan's concern was that his party's government in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa will face a backlash from the military push. However, he advised Khan to be ready to sacrifice his provincial government in order to allow the operation to succeed.
