ISLAMABAD:
Members of the National Assembly expressed grief over the death of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) MNA Tahira Asif and sympathised with the bereaved family.

They condemned the tragic firing incident, in which Asif succumbed to her injuries on Thursday.

Those who spoke on the occasion were Opposition leader Syed Khursheed Shah, Sheikh Salahuddin, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Sahibzada Tariqullah and Shahida Akhtar Ali.

The parliamentarians paid tribute to Asif and said she contributed greatly to the proceedings of the House and was a respected lady.

They demanded an investigation of the incident and that the culprits be arrested, emphasising the need to root out terrorism from society.

All parties, military leadership and religious leaders should sit together to formulate a strategy in this regard, the parliamentarians said.

Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain assured the House on behalf of the federal and Punjab governments that immediate investigations regarding the incident would be carried out.

He said the culprits involved in this crime would be arrested and brought to justice.

Asif was shot and injured while resisting an apparent robbery attempt in the Iqbal Town neighbourhood on Wednesday. She was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, where she passed away on Thursday.
