KARACHI:

The special three-day polio campaign in 38 union councils of the city kicked off smoothly on Sunday.

Polio workers launched the drive amid tight security, with delays being faced in certain areas to ensure foolproof security arrangements.

The special campaign has been launched for the children who have still not been administered polio drops. The health officials believe that around 400,000 children still need to be administrated drops against the crippling disease.

"These children are in the most sensitive areas of the city," said Dr Mazhar Khamisani, the provincial head of the Extended Programme on Immunisation. He said that the polio teams were able to meet their targets for Sunday. "We hope that we will be able to administer drops to everyone this time," he added.

Karachi executive district officer Health Dr Zafar Ejaz said that the campaign was targeted and will continue till Tuesday. "The first day achieved its set target," he also confirmed.

The health officials said that the drive will not continue in certain areas on Monday and Tuesday if there are any suspicions of security being compromised.
