Enhancing strength: CM’s Secretariat set to expand

The government is set to expand Chief Minister’s Secretariat substantially this year in line with the expansion in the provincial cabinet.


Seventy-two new posts will be created at the secretariat that currently employs 559 people. Twenty-eight more officers and 44 support staff will be inducted.

The new posts include two security officers, a coordinator on energy in grade 20, one secretary, four additional secretaries in grade 19 and five deputy secretaries in grade 18.



The cabinet’s size will be enhanced from 59 to 76 this financial year.

With the induction of 17 new members, the cabinet will consist of the chief minister, five advisers, 25 ministers, 40 parliamentary secretaries and five special assistants.

Rs219.93 million has been earmarked for the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in the budget presented on Friday; Rs199.94 million was allocated last year. Rs94.48 has been reserved for the Governor House’s Secretariat.


An amount of Rs60.27 million has been allocated for the Chief Minister’s Inspection Team, a modest increase over last year’s Rs55.52 million.

Rs115.13 million has been reserved for Governor’s House against Rs109.17 million allocated last year. The number of employees at the Governor’s Secretariat is being reduced from 182 to 146. Rs14.36 million has been allocated for the governor’s pay and allowances.

The chief minister will get Rs37 million discretionary funds and the governor Rs12 million. Rs155.89 million has been earmarked for the provincial cabinet.

Secretariat workers disappointed by budget

The Punjab Civil Secretariat Employees’ Association has said the 10 per cent raise in salaries announced in the provincial budget is not enough.

Association president Rana Nisar said the government had disappointed public servants.

Chaudhry Ghulam Ghous, additional general secretary of the association, regretted that the government had not upgraded the pay scales.

The government did not keep in mind the employees’ needs, Ghous said.Abdul Karim Awan, the association’s press secretary, called the budget “anti-worker”.
