ISLAMABAD: Lawyers from the twin cities boycotted courts on Wednesday to mark the imposition of emergency by former president Pervez Musharraf on November 3, three years ago.

The lawyers’ community of twin cities, including Islamabad District Bar (IDB) and Rawalpindi District Bar (RDB) stood away from the court proceedings to highlight their protest.

Lawyers of Rawalpindi District Court (RDC) assembled at the court premises and staged a demonstration against the imposition of emergency.

They denounced all the ‘illegal’ steps taken by Pervez Musharraf in 2007.

Hoisting black flags at the courts, the lawyers also held a general body’s meeting in which they highlighted the struggle and contribution of the lawyers for the country.

Speaking at the occasion, President RDB Malik Waheed Anjum said that the lawyers’ community was committed to maintain the independence of the bar and continue its struggle to strengthen the judiciary and rule of law.

He also lauded the role of civil society, which had sacrificed for the restoration of judiciary.

Similarly, the lawyers of IDB also took out a rally in the court premises and condemned the former president’s decision to break the constitution. They also chanted slogans against him and called for his trial

Speaking at the occasion, President IDB, Syed Wajid Gillani said  that now it
was the responsibility of lawyers to further strengthen the rule of law.

He also urged the lawyers to unite in order to counter the conspiracies being hatched against the judiciary.
