She says the man was blackmailing her to get her to marry him.
FAISALABAD:
A woman and her nephew were attacked with acid on Tuesday by a man she had apparently jilted.
Doctors said she had 70 per cent burns. The nephew too had received serious burns on his back.
Police said the woman, 30, a resident of Mansoorabad, had been married to a man in Gojra city.
They had developed differences and got divorced some time ago, police said. She located to Mansoorabad where she met with a property dealer who also got her a rented house near his own. He later asked her to marry him.
Apparently she had agreed initially to marry him but then broke up with him and started seeing another man.
On Tuesday, the property dealer attacked her with acid while she was riding a motorcycle with her 14-year-old nephew in Mansoorabad’s main bazaar.
The woman and her nephew were taken to the divisional headquarters hospital for treatment and later referred to Allied Hospital.
Dr Ishrat Ali, who was on duty in the Emergency Ward of the Allied Hospital, told media persons that the woman had received 70 per cent burns.
He said her face, shoulders, neck, chest and stomach were affected. Her nephew received burn injuries mostly on his back, he said.
“We are providing them intensive care but their condition is very serious,” Dr Ali said.
The woman spoke to media persons in the hospital. She said her attacker had been blackmailing her to marry him.
“After I refused, he attacked me with acid.”
The Mansoorabad station house officer said, “We have not received a formal complaint on the matter yet. Since a case has not been registered, we have not arrested anyone yet.”
Family of kidnapped 12-year-old girl protest
In Chiniot, the family of a 12 year-old girl on Tuesday protested against police inaction in arresting a man who they said had kidnapped their daughter.
They said the 35 year-old suspect had wanted to marry the girl but they had refused.
They said the man and some of his accomplices abducted the girl on June 3 but the police was yet to take any action towards her recovery.
Scores of protesters gathered in front of the Chiniot district police officer’s office and demanded that strict action be taken against the men who had kidnapped the girl.
The family said that they had filed a complaint with the Chenab Nagar police. “But the police were reluctant to even register a case against him as he is very influential in the area.”
They said the FIR was registered 72 hours after they had filed a complaint. They said the police had failed to arrest the man five days into the incident. The family requested Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to take strict notice of the incident and direct strict action against the kidnappers.
Muhammad Ashraf, one of the girl’s uncles, said that the police were providing the man protection.
District Police Officer Rao Munir Ahmad Zia called the girl’s family into his office and assured them that the suspects would be arrested in two days.
Chenab Nagar Station House Officer Rana Muhammad Anwar told The Express Tribune that they had registered the FIR immediately after receiving the complaint, not 72 hours later as the abducted girl’s family had alleged.
He said that they had constituted a police team to investigate the matter. He said that they had been looking for the suspects and were certain that they would find them soon.
