HYDERABAD:

A young girl was shot dead and her cousin was shot and injured allegedly by her uncle in a village in Sajawal district on Saturday.

The incident, which occurred in Ghazi Khan Chang village near Mirpur Bathoro taluka, was initially reported as ‘honour’ killing but the family later claimed it was a family dispute.

The victim, 16-year-old Lochi Chang, was reportedly having an affair with 17-year-old Sarfaraz Chang, the villager claimed on the condition of anonymity but the family denied these claims. The alleged killer, 40-year-old Misri Chang, escaped after the incident.

“Sarfaraz and Misri were having a fierce argument when Lochi interfered,” a relative, Ghafoor Chang, told the police. “But Misri couldn’t control his outburst and opened fire.”

According to SHO Dilawar Hussain, Lochi was shot in the chest and Sarfaraz in the head. He was later shifted to Hyderabad in critical condition while Lochi’s body was handed over to the family after the postmortem at a basic health unit in Daro. The family moved her body to Daro as there was no female doctor available to conduct the autopsy in Mirpur Bathoro.

The police have yet to determine the actual motive behind the killing. “All of them are family members. We went to their residence, shifted the bodies and recorded their statements,” said DSP Ashraf Abbasi. “We are waiting for the family to register the FIR. But if they don’t, the police will lodge a case.” The officials have not ruled out ‘honour killing’ as the cause.
