HYDERABAD:
Sindh IGP Iqbal Mehmood has asked the Hyderabad police to ensure that there was no illegal sales of weapons and ammunition by the arms shops and dealers.
Mehmood, who presided over the meeting with the police officials of Hyderabad region on Friday, directed the officials to maintain record of the sale of weapons. The SSPs and DSPs from across the region attended the meeting, which reviewed their performance and discussed the law and order issues.
According to an official who requested anonymity, a bullet that is sold in Hyderabad for Rs100, can be bought in Tando Allahyar for around Rs60 to Rs70. In Saddar Bazaar in Hyderabad, dozens of arms and ammunition shops have also sprung up over the last few years.
According to some sources within the police, the IG appeared visibly upset over the lack of police action against the illegal weapons dealers. "The police officials could not present details of any action taken by them so far in this regard," said a source, who was present at the meeting.
Mehmood asked Hyderabad DIG Sanaullah Abbasi to appoint an Investigation DSP in each sub-division of the district to improve the investigation process. He also directed the DIG to establish check posts on the highways and tighten the measures against the dacoits in rural areas.
The IG also said that the families of the martyred policemen will be given plots for which a land of 300 acres is currently being acquired. He also said that a first-ever police cadet college is also being established. After a meeting with a delegation of traders from Hyderabad, the IG asked the Hyderabad SSP, Pir Farid Jan Sarhindi, to deploy female police officers at all main markets.
