BANNU:

Two people were arrested on Friday while allegedly trying to smuggle weapons and drugs to Bannu from North Waziristan Agency (NWA).

According to Bannu Cantt police official Jalil Khan, a check post was set up in Do Sarak area based on intelligence information and a loaded vehicle was signalled to stop for checking around 11:15am.

Khan said the van was carrying the luggage of an internally displaced family leaving NWA for Bannu. He added that during the search, police found weapons and drugs hidden inside the vehicle. “Four grenades, three Three-nought-three rifles, one foreign-made assault rifle, hundreds of rounds of bullets and three kilogrammes of hashish were found in the van,” said Khan.

He added two men identified as Naseerullah and Nasrullah were arrested and shifted to an undisclosed location for further investigation.

Electricity thieves held

In a crackdown against power theft, at least 15 people were arrested in over 10 villages on the outskirts of Bannu on Thursday and Friday, while electricity supply from 10 transformers was also suspended.

Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Bannu SDO Muhammad Shafiq Khan Orakzai said on the directives of Wapda XEN, heavy contingents of police and Wapda officials launched the crackdown in Mohallah Gardanali, Bagh Gali, Railway Road, Naray Pul and villages near the cantonment area.

“Around 15 people who had connected illegal hooks to the main power transmission line were arrested,” said Orakzai, adding separate cases were filed against the culprits.

Orakzai further said the team also disconnected electricity supply from seven 100KV transformers and three 50KV transformers in the area due to the non-payment of bills.
