MUZAFFARABAD:

A police officer was killed, while three protesters were injured due to tear gas shelling in Charhoi.

PML-N leader Munsifdad Khan  and members of civil society were protesting against the transfer of tehsil headquarters offices to newly-constructed buildings some five kilometres away from Charhoi city when the protest turned violent.

Mirpur Station House Officer Raja Jameel reached the spot to negotiate with protesters when they started pelting stones on the police. In retaliation, the police fired tear gas shells because of which Jameel suffocated to death, while three PML-N protesters were injured.

Khan ,who was leading the protest and belongs to Charhoi, claimed that the protesters just wanted to convey their concerns to the government. “Muhammad Yaseen purchased 500 kanals some five kilometres from Charhoi city, which he wants to sell at commercial rates at the cost of tehsil headquarters offices.” The tehsil offices are not being shifted for the love of the people but to raise the value of the senior minister’s land he added.

Senior Minister Chaudhry Muhammad Yaseen while speaking to The Express Tribune said the allegations levelled against him by PML-N leaders were baseless.

Officials from the district administrations of Kotli and Mirpur rushed to the area along with additional police force to control the situation.

AJK prime minister has asked the Mirpur commissioner to investigate the matter within a week.
