LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court sought a report from the Punjab Police inspector general on Thursday on the impounding of bank-leased cars, allegedly in collusion with the staff of commercial banks.  The bench asked the IGP to stop police from aiding such activities.

The court was hearing Muslim Commercial Bank’s petition, which stated that police had not been returning some impounded cars.  The bank’s counsel said the car had been leased to Shafqat Raza and it was impounded by South Cantt police in 2011 after a dispute occurred between the two parties. The petitioner said all the disputes between Raza and the bank had been settled, but police had not handed over the car.

The court summoned the IGP  and ordered him to hand over the car to Raza within two days and produce details about all bank-leased cars impounded by police. Justice Khan said banks had apparently hired gangsters who were harassing citizens over non-payment of car installments.
