KARACHI:
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has condemned the way the city was shut down the past two days and has urged the law enforcers to improve the situation in Karachi.

Addressing a press conference at the Sindh Assembly building on Thursday, PTI MPAs Syed Hafeezuddin, Khurram Sher Zaman and Samar Ali Khan blamed the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led government for failing to fix law and order situation that worsened immediately after the arrest of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain in London on Tuesday.

“They should transfer their government to those ‘unknown people’ of the city who forcibly closed down shops and businesses,” said Hafeezuddin. “The present situation has made it very hard for the residents to run their homes.”

He urged the law enforcement agencies, which are independent forces, to come on the streets and establish their writ. “If the police and Rangers need, PTI activists can also help them maintain peace,” he said.

Hafeezuddin reiterated the party’s support to the MQM leadership and its workers. “But why are they staging a protest at Numaish Chowrangi when the London police arrested Altaf Hussain, and not the Sindh Police?” he asked.

“They have a large number of supporters and sympathisers in London also,” he pointed out. “They should hold a protest in front of 10 Downing Street.”

MPA Zaman pointed out how all commercial activities in the city have been suspended for the past two days despite several announcements from the MQM leadership to open the shops and other businesses. On Thursday, some ‘unknown’ people were again ordering shopkeepers to close down, he said. “Why are they punishing the residents of Karachi?”

Develop Karachi

Meanwhile, Zaman also asked the PPP to announce a special package for Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur in the upcoming budget. He said these cities need a lot of attention. Due to political revenge, the government has seized the development budget of those MPAs on the opposition benches, Zaman claimed, demanding the government immediately release the funds of the opposition members so that the development works in their constituencies can be carried out.
