According to police officials, the blast occurred at around 6pm outside Jama-e-Mustafa mosque. Orangi SP Sajid Sadozai told The Express Tribune that between four to five kilogrammes of explosive material was used in the bomb.
“We have found a mutilated body from the site and a live hand grenade which was later defused,” said Sadozai, adding that the man may be the suicide bomber. “We are searching the site for further evidence to ascertain the nature of the blast and its target,” he said.
Panic gripped the area following the blast as people rushed to their homes. The blast also damaged part of the mosque’s boundary wall.
Zone West DIG Capt (retd) Tahir Naveed confirmed that two people were killed in the incident while another four were injured. He believed that the bomb was an Improvised Explosive Device fitted in a rickshaw near the mosque. DIG Naveed added that the blast occurred some distance away from the mosque.
