Five people, including two senior army officers, were killed and as many were injured when a suicide bomber targeted a vehicle belonging to a defence ministry agency in Attock district on Wednesday. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack that took place near a railway crossing in Fateh Jang tehsil of Attock, some 25 kilometres from Islamabad.
According to the police, the vehicle was on routine patrol when the attack took place. “Two military officers Col Muhammad Zahir and Col Arshad Hussain and three civilians died when a suicide bomber hit their twin cabin near Tarnol,” Maj-Gen Asim Bajwa, the director general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), confirmed in a post on microblogging website Twitter.

The civilian victims were identified as Muhammad Saleem, a rickshaw driver, and Gul Saleem and Noor Saleem, both real brothers who were travelling in the tri-wheeler.
A security official said the suicide bomber appeared to be 17 to 19 years old. “The bomber was hiding in the bushes near the railway crossing. He jumped out and detonated his suicide vest as the vehicle slowed down before crossing the tracks,” an eyewitness told The Express Tribune.
A heavy contingent of army, police and other law enforcers reached the bombsite as rescuers shifted the casualties to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, Fateh Jang, where the injured were said to be in critical condition. In the meantime, investigators and explosives experts gathered forensic evidence at the site. Funeral prayers for Col Zahir and Col Hussain were offered at the Chaklala garrison later in the day and were attended by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Rashad Mehmood, according to an ISPR statement. The bodies were later sent to their ancestral towns for burial with full military honours, the statement added.
The prime minister condemned the attack, describing it as ‘shameful and cowardly act’. Offering condolences to the bereaved families, he made it clear that ‘such cowardly acts’ could not weaken the government’s resolve. “The whole nation acknowledges the sacrifices being rendered by our armed forces for the sake of the country. We express solidarity with them at this critical juncture,” he was quoted as saying in a statement.
Former president Asif Ali Zardari also denounced the suicide attack. Paying tributes to the security forces, he said the people of Pakistan will never succumb to militants.
TTP claims responsibility
The deadly attack, which broke a relatively long lull in Taliban violence, came days after the TTP split into two groups, limiting the government’s chances of finding a negotiated settlement to end the decade-long insurgency.
TTP central spokesperson Shahidullah Shahid claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call to The Express Tribune from an undisclosed location. “This is revenge for the killing of seven Taliban members in Karachi recently and the bombardment by fighter jets of innocent people in the tribal areas,” he added. Military warplanes and helicopter gunships had strafed suspected hideouts of militants in North Waziristan Agency late last months, killing nearly 80 militants. However, local tribesmen and Taliban claimed that several civilians also died in the blitz.

oh wow ! condemnation that's what the premier can do..no no he went to say the funeral prayers too...so let the killing go on....condemnation on and on......!!! Why don.t the army and the premiers sit down and chalk a plan out to wipe out militants or devise a strategy to counter them at least...else see the doom !!
This will be the result when negotiations talks failed. But military failed to understand and came at loggers head with the government over this issue. No one was there to mourn and attend funeral of civilians that were killed during the attack. They were also Pakistanis and deserved the same protocol as the military men,
In this scenario it would be naive for government to think of peace talks with Taliban. These state of affairs demand a comprehensible strategy by army and government to crackdown on these militants and to stop these brutal killings by them.
The policy of supporting Islamic Terrorists with the intent of targeting India and other countries followed by the Pakistan Military and the Pakistani State, appears not to be a consequence free option for the Pakistan Military and the hapless citizens of Pakistan.
As the old adage goes “You reap what you sow”. Alternatively spring boarding of the more contemporary comment by Hillary Clinton, “ the guy who keeps poisonous snakes in his backyard convinced they’ll only attack his neighbours, will eventually get bitten.”
Revenge by RAW for Herat consulate attack?? Any takes for such conspiracy
@Noor: "Time has arrived when armed forces of Pakistan do a massive air strike and ground operation to kill these beasts and root out terrorism"
What are you going to do about the anti-drone activists like IK and such? If they protest drones, won't they logically have to protest air strikes even more since air strikes and ground offensive will cause more collateral damage than drones?
How about impromptu rallies and dharnas in suppport of the security forces -from the likes of Hafiz Saeed and the ilk - when the army is attacked by the terrorists?
Pakistan Army whole nation is looking towards you. Crush these terrorists once and for all. We salute you for your sacrifices.
The misplaced policy of using terror by the state for several decades has gone full circle and its backlash is now being suffered by their mentors. There is an urgent need to assess further course of action against militants which needs to be stepped up using full might of the state and not getting intimidated by their threats.
PM is scare of using TTP terrorist directly whenever he condemn the attacks
@ Zaida P, You have said the truth which people in Pakistan are afraid of uttering ... Fighting the bad terrorists that attack Pakistani state, while providing support to those that are fighting India and Afghanistan, will not work ... the people of Pakistan will have to live with both, or none ... !
Please shutdown the terror network. There is no such thing as good and bad terrorists. Stop training and funding them before they take down Pakistan itself.
The Pushtons are coming to take Pakthonkhwa.
That's all these foreign funded criminals can do. Hire teenagers to hide in bushes and attack others. Shame on them. It only shows how desperate and cowardly they are. Keep up the good work Pakistani military and continue to crush these cowards. The sacrifices of professional soldiers has not been wasted since they seem to have the cowards on the run.
Time has arrived when armed forces of Pakistan do a massive air strike and ground operation to kill these beasts and root out terrorism regardless of what politicians and mullahs say.
This will not demoralize the sons of Pakistan who are determined to eradicate terrorists. We have great respect for these sacrifices. You will live forever.
Nation salute sacrifices of Pakistani soldiers. Our prayers are with you for the success against those who intend to cause any disgrace to motherland. Continue efforts against them and kill them all for that they have killed our loved one. Pakistan Army Zindabad....
Muhammad Saleem, a rickshaw driver, and Gul Saleem and Noor Saleem, both "real brothers"???????
Anyone attend their funerals?
