PARACHINAR:

Eight people were killed and seven others, including a woman and two children, were injured in a bomb attack in Kurram Agency on Tuesday.

Maqsoodul Hasan, the assistant political agent of Parchinar, said a passenger van was en route to Parachinar from Central Kurram when it was hit by a roadside improvised explosive device in the Khomasa area of Upper Kurram.

Hasan said the vehicle was destroyed and officials said four passengers were killed on the spot while the others succumbed to their injuries at the agency headquarters hospital.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack till the filing of this report and the political administration has launched a search operation in the area.

Kurram Agency has been a hotbed of sectarian violence where scores of people have been killed in sporadic outbreaks of fighting between Shia and Sunni tribesmen. The region, however, has been relatively calm following a peace deal between the two sides in 2011.

Medical Superintendent of the agency headquarters hospital Dr Sabir Husain said that one of the injured died on the way to the hospital and seven passengers are under treatment. Husain said the condition of three patients is critical.

Former MNA from the agency Dr Javed Hussain and JUI-F spokesperson Qari Afsar Khan denounced the attack as a conspiracy to sabotage peace in the agency. Several tribesmen were arrested by the political administration under the FCR and their shops were sealed. Meanwhile, Governor Sardar Mehtab Abbasi also condemned the attack.
