ABBOTABAD:
A trader on Monday accused an ASI of Abbottabad police for illegally detaining and torturing him for three days. Following this, the local traders’ body observed a shutter-down strike demanding criminal proceedings against the official.
A truck store owner, Adil Iqbal, told the media a man named Khurram Shehzad from Gali Baniyan village came to his shop a few months back and purchased a truck on credit. After Iqbal contacted him several times for payment of the vehicle, Shehzad came to his shop on Friday and got into an argument.
Iqbal said during the fight, Shehzad suddenly called the police and said Iqbal was trying to kidnap him. Along with other officials, ASI Tariq Saeed reached his shop and took Iqbal to the Cantonment police station where they allegedly beat him with a leather whip. Iqbal claimed Saeed also cursed him and warned to ‘teach a lesson’ for demanding money from a man whose relative was a good friend of the police officer.
When the traders’ community got to know about the incident, they secured his release. Led by Anjuman Tajran President Sardar Qaisar Latif and Naeem Awan, the traders then went to DSP Khursheed Khan and lodged a complaint against the accused ASI while Iqbal was sent to DHQ hospital.
When approached for comments, SHO Gulzar Khan said Iqbal was arrested for attempting to kidnap Khurram Shehzad.
He added he has no knowledge of Iqbal being subjected to torture. He assured if medical reports proved Iqbal was tortured, legal action would be taken against the ASI.
