Internal democracy: ‘Selected, not elected, PTI members running province’s affairs’
Naeemul Haq says elections for party’s key K-P positions to be held in August.
PESHAWAR:
For the past three months, the provincial affairs of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are reportedly being run by people allegedly selected during the party’s core committee meeting three months ago.
Party members told The Express Tribune on Friday that even though PTI believes in democracy, it is yet to hold elections for key positions in K-P, which is contributing to the growing uncertainty within the party.
Requesting anonymity, a PTI insider said, “We believe in democracy, not just in the country but within the party too. I would say we have had a democratic setup within PTI but at the moment we have selected, not elected, people occupying key positions in K-P, which is contrary to our slogan.”
He further claimed that the Central Executive Committee (CEC) does not exist since a single meeting of the CEC could not be held for over three months and most of the important decisions are being taken during the core committee meetings.
Meanwhile, PTI K-P General Secretary Khalid Masood denied that the provincial setup was selected and said it was formed during the core committee meeting after a collective decision by the members.
Naeemul Haq, the office in-charge of party chief Imran Khan, told The Express Tribune that proposals for amendments in the constitution were almost finalised and likely to be adopted by June 2014.
Haq added that the CEC will be formed before the amendments are tabled since it will approve the proposed changes. The PTI official further said the elections for positions in K-P will be held as soon as the party is done reviewing the 7 million voters who registered for the general elections.
“In fact, we don’t have the core committee either, rather the advisory committee since the core committee is supposed to comprise 15 members but the meetings we hold are attended by around 40 members,” Haque said, adding elections for key K-P positions were expected to be held in August.
