Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Governor Mehtab Abbasi said on Wednesday that he would take up the issue of reopening the Saidu Sharif Airport in Swat, as well as the construction of roads in the district, with the prime minister (PM).

Addressing the inauguration ceremony of a private hospital in Odigram, Abbasi said the cooperation of the people was mandatory for restoration of peace.

He added that militancy has dealt a blow to the health and education sectors in K-P and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas. “We are introducing a new scheme in collaboration with NGOs for the provision of better health and education facilities,” Abbasi announced.

“The government is spending over Rs80 billion on welfare schemes across Pakistan,” he added. Abbasi also announced that construction work on GT Road in Swat will be started soon and the reopening of the airport, which has been closed since 2012, will also be discussed with the PM on a priority basis.
