KARACHI:

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee (MC) has unanimously endorsed Chairman Najam Sethi’s request to approve the board’s new constitution and conduct elections as soon as possible.

It should be mentioned here that the PCB has already sent the new constitution to the Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) ministry for approval.

“The MC members have unanimously endorsed Sethi’s request to the IPC ministry to promulgate the new democratic PCB constitution at the earliest and subsequently conduct the elections without delay,” decided the MC after their meeting in Lahore.

The sixth meeting, headed by Sethi, included other members comprising Shaharyar Khan, Shakil Shaikh, Zaheer Abbas, Iqbal Qasim and Chief Operating Officer Subhan Ahmad.

In another development, the MC members also took note of the outstanding arrears of approximately Rs20 million detailed in the internal audit report for the period Zaka Ashraf in charge. They have authorised Sethi to make inquiries and attempt to enforce recoveries.

The MC also unanimously approved health insurance and other benefits for the board’s contractual employees, which are currently only available to permanent employees of the PCB.

Instability hurting our cricket badly: Sethi

With the Supreme Court (SC) hearing scheduled to take place Tuesday, Sethi feels that the current instability in the PCB is damaging Pakistan cricket.

“Instability in the PCB is hurting our cricket badly,” Sethi told The Express Tribune. “Our contracts and international commitments are constantly being written up and torn apart by successive PCB managements or annulled by the courts.”

Answering a question related to bringing back international cricket to Pakistan, he replied that the board has opened discussions with a couple of countries to sort out security concerns.

“We wrote to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) as soon as we read about their president’s views. I think we have to visibly improve the security situation before any major international team can accept our invitation.”

‘I’m ready to fight the case’

Ashraf has vowed to become a direct party in the case which will be heard in the SC Tuesday, while he has also denied allegations of corruption and outstanding arrears against him.

He added that the MC meeting is in contempt of the court as the SC has issued a stay order and his lawyers will file a case against Sethi. He further said that if the IPC was found involved as well, they would be nominated in the contempt.

“It’s in contempt of the court to call an MC meeting and my lawyers will file a case against it,” said Ashraf. “I’m ready fight the case one on one against Sethi.”
