Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leaders on Sunday asked the British government as to why their party chief, Altaf Hussain, was being ‘harassed’ and his bank accounts being frozen.
“I want to ask Britain’s Prime Minster David Cameron why Altaf Hussain is being harassed when the MQM is fully cooperating in police investigations.
“Why are his bank accounts being frozen when no FIR has been lodged against him and no charge framed in court,” said senior MQM lawmaker Dr Farooq Sattar, while addressing a rally in Karachi. Thousands of MQM workers had turned up to express solidarity with their leader.
Sattar said Altaf’s last bank account would also be frozen by the British authorities on June 6. “In the money laundering case, we have submitted proof of every penny received. I want to ask the UK authorities as to how a UK resident can survive without a bank account. How will he pay his utility bills and cater to the needs of his 11-year-old daughter?”
In a TV interview last week, Altaf had revealed that all his bank accounts in Britain had been frozen by the authorities.
“Altaf Hussain’s right to life is being violated. This is a matter of human rights,” he said, adding that the UK authorities were violating human rights as well as the Magna Carta.
He said that his party has approached British courts against the ‘injustice’, and would also demonstrate outside 10 Downing Street, but would continue to cooperate in investigations.
He said Altaf Hussain has a hobby of collecting coins which was not a cognizable offense. “We will not tolerate prejudice whether in the UK or in Pakistan,” he added.
MQM Deputy Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui claimed that 200,000 people had turned up at the rally to express solidarity with their leader. “Altaf was the one who gave us an identity,” he said as the participants shouted ‘We love Altaf Hussain’.
Barrister Saif Ali said that the people who thought they could damage Altaf’s ideology and movement – by closing bank accounts and levelling false accusations – were mistaken. “He is not afraid of any cases.”
MQM MNA Nabil Gabol said those accusing Altaf of money laundering should first see the $200 billion stashed in Swiss banks, and the palatial mansions near Hyde Park in London. “Only a small house belonging to a poor man on Edgware Road is being targeted.”
“Altaf Hussain doesn’t need any identity card or passport to prove his Pakistani identity. If Altaf is not a Pakistani, then Nawaz Sharif and Chaudhry Nisar are also not Pakistanis,” he said.
“Whenever Altaf comes to Karachi, millions of people will go to the airport to receive him and will take him to Nine Zero without any passport,” he said.
Another MQM leader, Haider Abbas Rizvi said that Altaf Hussain was the only modern, liberal and secular leader in Pakistan. “His views should be heard and his issues resolved,” he appealed to the British premier.

@Haque Parast: Altaaf Hussain indeed is a Pakistani citizen and nothing can change that and neither does anyone need to prove his citizenship. But it was the same Pakistan that Altaf Husain sought "asylum" from and according to the asylum policy of UK, you cannot return to the country from which you seek asylum on the basis that you might be killed. So I need to know why would Altaf Husain like to get back to a country from which he got asylum thinking someone would kill him? Or is he, all of a sudden, not afraid of being killed anymore?
@Brianless Awam: You are brainless indeed. Altaf Hussain is a Pakistani National by birth, by Pakistani law and by every law of the world. Who is the illiterate now?
@marshal is back: Plz do let us know when you wake up from your dreams!! I dare you to go ask those millions that how many are forced to be here? Have you ever tried to prove your own baseless allegations? Go look at he pictures of all those jalsa and show me how many are held on gun points? Dude... atleast try to make sense when making up fantasy stories!
@Brianless Awam: Look up Pakistani Law before opening your ignorant mouth. Pakistan and UK citizens can hold dual nationality. Meaning he is 100% Pakistani National as per Law of Pakistan! Stop listening to the false and fabricated propaganda of your ignorant leader and learn the facts first.
I am a Karachite and grandparents did migrate to Pakistan from Indian occupied Pakistan:
MQM, you have been able to deliver nothing. Guess what Quota system still intact after 25+ years of your rule. Karachi University, DOW, NED and other institution have seen constant degradation in their performance. Hundred of thousands have been murdered. My advise to my citymen to shed this party NOW - decommission it and join one of the national parties.
@John: Your reply really shows how dignified you are and of course when you can't argue you cry like a 5 year old ... so please where you can't argue don't poke your nose in such matters at all...
@Gol Gappa: I consider it below my dignity to engage you and your kind,in any kind of discussion. You can troll on!
@MH: Japan offered to revive KCR with its own money at 0 mark up but Corruption Wadera Party created hurdles for six years until now when Japanese company took back their offer but MQM never bothered to take out a rally against this crime of Wadera Corruption Party against people of Karachi.
KCR would have provided dignified, comfortable and smooth transportation to the people of Karachi.
@raj: Have they ever taken out a rally against wadera corruption party loot and destruction of Karachi during last six long years ?
Not a single rally, strike or dharna in 30 Years against Quota System, against Kicking out of Urdu Speaking people from Sind civil service, against deliberate Water Shortage in Karachi, for the Revival of Karachi Circular Railway, against Wadera Corruption Party plunder and victimization of Karachi.
However there's the prompt threat of shutting down Karachi for one year over delay of passport to the British Chief, there's quick rally over the closure of British bank accounts of the Britisher Chief.
Karachi has its own problems like law and order, development etc but MQM who takes its votes from karachites has its own set of problems. We dont care if Altaf Husain gets a passport or CNIC, do the work you were chosen for..
MQM: Please cut the crap..
It is extraordinary how people's brains are twisted and tuned to think.... when MQM makes a hue and cry over "harrasing" Altaf, they failed to acknowledge that he has to follow the rules/laws of the land that he has lived in for over 20 years and is a citizen - i.e., money laundering and not declaring source of income is a crime. For a start can Altaf/MQM lovers even explain how does he have the lifestyle that he maintains and has bank accounts with vast sums of money.
Altaf is not a Pakistani national. He is a British National. So why the illiterate public is so worried about him?
Altaf lives in UK, is loyal subject of the Queen and his supporters are disrupting the daily life of Karachi. What kind non sense is that.
Altaf Hussain, is a Pakistani and leader of million, so public have right to ask,if he is being harassed by authorities over there, with out any proof.. ET also published this article because ET know the popularity of AH in public, Good article
Haters can hate on, but no political leader in Pakistan can gather a crowd this large on a few days notice. Altaf Hussain is, was, and always will the leader of millions.
Must blame Punjabi Establishment in the UK for this conspiracy......Lol
I am a mohajir. please fellow karachiites. stop acting like sheep for this criminal enterprise.
You are nothing but a hater, Altaf Hussain is a Pakistani him and his ancestors gave you the identity of a Pakistani, if Altaf Hussain and his ancestors can create Pakistan then they can also recreate and reinstate the Jinnahs's Capital (Karachi).
MQM chief is British national, right? He should protest in London, not in Karachi, Pakistan has no fault. Why to disturb Karachi because of some actions in UK?
