MULTAN:

Men believed to be involved in the kidnapping of a Chinese cyclist were arrested by the police from Muzaffargarh on Thursday. However, officials have been unable to recover the Chinese man so far.

Police said the Elite Force, the CIA police from Bhakkar and the district police of Dera Ismail Khan conducted a joint operation to recover the cyclist who was kidnapped a week ago from Dera Ismail Khan.

Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Sajna group had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, saying the Chinese national was safe in their custody and was meant for swapping prisoners. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had directed the authorities on Tuesday to take measures for recovery of the Chinese tourist.

Police said security forces raided Doolhay Waala, a rural area near Muzaffargarh on Thursday. They said two men believed to be associated with the TTP Sajna group were arrested. They were identified as Shahnawaz Zaman and Saeed Muhammad.

Police said both men hailed from Dera Ismail Khan and had rented a house in the village. Police said the men were believed to be involved in various kidnappings, extortion and bank robberies. They said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had announced a Rs5 million reward for Zaman’s capture.
