PESHAWAR:
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) IGP Nasir Khan Durrani on Thursday directed district police officers (DPOs) and regional police officers (RPOs) to pay surprise visits to police stations, police posts and market places in their respective areas.
Durrani has also decided to pay surprise visits himself in a move to bridge the gap between the public and police.
Earlier, the senior command of the police had abandoned the practice of visiting far-flung and turbulent areas over security concerns, while visits to relatively peaceful areas were confined to police lines. Similarly, interaction of senior police officials with the public was minimal and only a selected few were invited to attend events at police lines.
In order to streamline the operations of the police and to boost confidence of citizens in the force, Durrani has directed RPOs and DPOs to interact with the public during the surprise visits. The IGP himself visited Mansehra and Battagram districts on Wednesday and convened police darbars where he addressed the participants.
Durrani inspected the police stations and also talked to journalists and intelligentsia. He paid a visit to Battagram Bazaar where he talked to people and heard their views and problems, following which he promptly directed the concerned officers to take remedial steps.
During his visit to Mansehra, the IGP inaugurated the Shuhada Monument and met a student who had recently been gang raped. The IGP assured the victim and her family that the culprits would be handed exemplary punishment.
During the last six months, Durrani has visited Charsadda, Swabi, Nowshera, Mardan, Swat, Tank, Kohat, Lakki Marwat, Shangla, Buner, Kohistan and Torghar.
“To see the IGP amongst us inspired confidence and instilled a sense of security,” said a student who had the opportunity of interacting with the IGP during his visit to a bazaar in Tank city.
“The practice of meeting random people at random places enables the common man to apprise senior police officials about the grievances and opinions of the general public.”
