KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) directed the police officials on Wednesday to ensure that the investigations into the murder of O'Level student Suleman Lashari are carried out independently, without any influences.

Headed by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, the bench gave this direction while disposing of a petition filed by the family of the victim, seeking suspension of the suspect's father, SSP Ghulam Sarwar Abro, until the completion of the murder trial. Advocate Zameer Hussain Ghumro filed the power of attorney on behalf of SSP Abro.

During Wednesday's proceedings, Legal AIG Ali Sher Jakhrani filed a statement on behalf of the police IG, who stated that the investigation into the murder is already being carried out in a fair and transparent manner. South Range DIG Abdul Khaliq Sheikh and South SP are supervising the investigation, which is being carried out by Inspector Muhammad Mobin, he said.

AIG Jakhrani added that the witnesses have already identified the suspect, Salman Abro, during an identification parade and assured that no influences will be accepted.

The petitioner's lawyers, Muhammad Khan Buriro and Mubashir Mirza, expressed their satisfaction on the statement given by the AIG and requested the court dispose of the plea. The bench also directed the police to ensure that the investigations are fair.

Case history

Sulaiman, a student of O' Levels, was shot dead on May 8 while he was studying at his house in Defence Housing Authority. The police claimed that the main accused, Salman Abro, had come to the victim's house, along with five police constables, to settle an argument, but opened fire.

The slain student's father, Sardar Ghulam Mustafa Lashari, had requested the high court to place SSP Ghulam Sarwar Abro, the father of the alleged killer of his son, under suspension till the murder trial is not complete, as he may be influencing the investigations.

He was afraid the investigations would not be carried out in a fair manner until the suspect's father, who is currently serving in the police department as SSP of the Law Enforcement Instruction Centre at Sakrand, remained in office.
