Afghan elections were important process for the country: Ban ki-Moon

The UN will remain committed to Afghanistan after the elections are completed, says Ban ki-Moon.

SHANGHAI: The United Nations Secretary General (UNSG) Ban ki-Moon assured outgoing Afghan president Hamid Karzai of the world body's commitment to the war torn nation beyond this year's elections.

Ki-Moon welcomed the announcement of the 5 April Afghan elections in a meeting with Karzai on Wednesday, a read out of their meeting read.

The Secretary General said that elections were an important process for the country and a successful and peaceful transition would be a significant accomplishment for the Afghan government.

He added that United Nations will continue to work with international partners to support the Afghan-led election processes and will remain committed to Afghanistan after the elections are completed, he said.

In regard to the recent floods and landslide which killed hundreds of people in Afghanistan, the UNSG extended his condolences to the victims and survivors.
