Zulfiqar clinches national championship

Zulfiqar Ali of Multan emerged as the national champion for the year 2014 on the fourth and last day of the 53rd National Amateur Golf Championship of Pakistan at the Royal Palm Golf and Country Club Golf Course in Lahore on Sunday.


He showed consistency throughout the four rounds and started the last day with a lead. He then concluded the last 18 holes with five-over par and an aggregate score of 297 to win the title.

Pakistan Army’s Naeem Khan scored a final card of two-over par and an aggregate of 302 to bag second spot. Ghazanfar Mehmood came third with an aggregate of 303.


Meanwhile, Ami Qin of Islamabad won the ladies championship after scoring a six-over par on the final day to make an aggregate of 251. Maryama Khan of Gymkhana stood on the runner-up position with an aggregate score of 253, while Ghazala Yasmin of Garrison came third with an aggregate score of 254.

Earlier in the championship, the Pakistan team, comprising Salman Jehangir and Taimur Khan, won the international team competition and also overcame Sri Lanka to win the JR Jayewardne Trophy. In the inter-association team match, Punjab won the title while team Sindh grabbed the runners-up spot.

The prizes were awarded to the winners by Punjab’s Minister for Education Rana Mashood Ahmed.

Dignitaries such as Secretary Pakistan Golf Federation Brigadier (R) Nayyar Afzal, Shahid Wahab Rao of Punjab Golf Association, Asad IA Khan of Sindh Golf Association and all the managers of the teams were also present at the awards distribution ceremony.
