Accountability drive: Govt to examine asset records of Wapda officials

The federal government is compiling records of all assets owned by Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) officials in a bid to hold them accountable for any financial impropriety.
While responding to questions in the lower house of parliament on Monday, Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali said that the ministry was collecting details of all assets owned by Wapda officials.
After scrutinising these records, cases will be sent to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for investigation into irregular financial gains or assets which are beyond the limits of an official’s income, the minister added.
“We know there is huge corruption in Wapda and some officials have even established factories from ill gotten gains. But we will hold them accountable,” said Sher.
He further said the ministry was working to stamp out corruption from the ailing organisation and that dishonest officials will face charges.
Additionally, the ministry informed the National Assembly that over 6,000MW of electricity will be generated over the next five years through hydro-power generation, raising the overall production to 13,000MW.
Polio cases
The ministry of health services, regulation and coordination informed parliament that out of the total polio cases reported during 2014 from across the world, 80% of the cases originate from Pakistan.
The ministry revealed that 75% of the polio cases were detected in Fata, 15% in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and 10% in Sindh. However, no case was recorded from Balochistan, Punjab, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
