Food poisoning: 150 villagers hospitalised after valima banquet

At least 150 villagers, a majority of them women, were hospitalised on Monday after consuming traditional food at a wedding banquet a day earlier in a remote village of Abbottabad.
The condition of 25 wedding guests is critical, Ayub Medical Complex’s Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Manan told The Express Tribune.
The area police and residents said all those affected had attended the valima ceremony of Khurrum Khan, from Thanda Choha village, in the jurisdiction of Nawanshehr Town, on Sunday. The host had served them all with traditional dishes of rice with beef and vegetable curry, which allegedly caused the food poisoning.
The guests, especially women and children, complained of stomach pain coupled with vomiting and diarrhoea. They were taken to Ayub Medical Complex.
“We have treated over 85 villagers - 97% of them are women who were brought dehydrated and with the complaint of diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal cramps,” Dr Manan said.
